Why Play Matters at Every Age

Recess: More Than Just a Break for Kids

For children, play is often seen as “just fun,” but recent studies show it is one of the most important parts of healthy development. New guidance released by the American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes that recess is essential for children’s academic success, social development, and emotional well-being. Research shows that regular recess improves memory retention, attention span, and classroom behavior while also helping reduce stress levels.

Schools that provide at least 20 minutes of daily recess often see better focus and fewer behavioral disruptions. Recess also gives children a valuable chance to practice conflict resolution, teamwork, and creativity through unstructured play. Recent studies have even linked more outdoor recess to lower chronic stress and healthier body weight. As experts continue to advocate for protected recess time, many educators are recognizing that play is not a distraction from learning—it is part of learning itself.

Adults Need Play, Too

Play shouldn’t end when childhood does. Researchers are increasingly highlighting the importance of play for adults, especially in a world dominated by busy schedules and digital overload. Playful activities—whether board games, sports, hobbies, creative arts, or simply laughing with friends—help reduce cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone.

Studies suggest that adults who regularly engage in playful activities often report better mental health, improved problem-solving skills, and stronger social connections. Play stimulates creativity and can even boost workplace innovation by encouraging flexible thinking and collaboration. It gives the brain a chance to reset, much like recess does for children.

Making Time to Play

Whether it’s a child racing across a playground or an adult joining a weekend pickleball match, play serves a powerful purpose. It restores focus, relieves stress, and strengthens relationships. In a culture that often celebrates productivity above all else, making time for play may be one of the healthiest choices people of all ages can make.
