BTS: The Global Phenomenon That Changed Pop Music Forever

From Small Beginnings to Worldwide Fame

BTS, short for Bangtan Sonyeondan (Bullet proof Boy Scouts), debuted on June 13, 2013, under South Korean entertainment company Big Hit Entertainment. The seven-member group—RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook—initially focused on hip-hop-inspired music with lyrics about the pressures faced by young people.

Unlike many K-pop groups that came from large entertainment agencies, BTS started with relatively limited resources. However, the group’s authenticity, energetic performances, and willingness to connect directly with fans through social media quickly helped them build a loyal following known as the “ARMY.”

A Meteoric Rise to Success

Over the next decade, BTS became one of the most successful musical acts in history. Their albums consistently topped charts around the world, including the U.S. Billboard 200, while singles such as “Dynamite,” “Butter,” and “Permission to Dance” became global hits.

The group sold out stadiums including Wembley Stadium in London and the Rose Bowl in California, making history as one of the first Korean acts to headline many of the world’s largest venues. Along the way, BTS broke countless streaming, album sales, and concert attendance records while helping introduce millions of people to K-pop.

Their music often explores themes of mental health, self-love, friendship, and perseverance, helping them connect with fans across cultures and languages.

Military Service Put the Group on Pause

Like all able-bodied South Korean men, BTS members were required to complete mandatory military service. Beginning in late 2022, the members enlisted one by one, with Jin entering first because he was the oldest.

Rather than seeking a permanent exemption, the group chose to fulfill its national obligation. By mid-2025, all seven members had completed their service and reunited, marking one of the most anticipated comebacks in modern music. Their return was celebrated by fans worldwide and was followed by new music and a major world tour.

Why BTS Declined Grammy Consideration

Although BTS has earned multiple Grammy nominations over the years, the group has never won the prestigious award. In a surprising move, they recently announced that they would not submit their latest album for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards.

The decision came after the Recording Academy introduced a new category for Best Asian Pop Music Performance. BTS explained that they want their music to be judged alongside all artists rather than being separated by region or language. In a joint statement, the members said they hope their music “can be appreciated for what it is, instead of being divided by region or language.”

A Lasting Legacy

More than a decade after their debut, BTS has become far more than a successful boy band. They have helped reshape the global music industry, proving that artists can achieve worldwide success regardless of the language they sing in. Their influence extends beyond music to fashion, philanthropy, and popular culture, while their devoted fan base continues to grow around the globe.

With new music, international tours, and millions of fans eagerly following every move, BTS shows no signs of slowing down. Their journey from a small Korean music label to global superstardom remains one of the most remarkable success stories in modern entertainment.
