Lots of Movie Nostalgia This Summer

The summer of 2025 has proven to be one of the most exciting movie seasons in recent memory, packed with major franchise returns, superhero reboots, and animated favorites. From dinosaurs roaring back onto the big screen to the Man of Steel soaring once again, audiences are flocking to theaters for nostalgia, spectacle, and star power. Whether you’re a fan of slasher thrillers, family musicals, or comic book action, this year’s summer lineup has something for everyone. Here’s a look at five of the hottest releases heating up the box office.

Jurassic World: Rebirth

This July 2 release marks the long-awaited return to Isla Nublar — nearly 30 years after the original Jurassic Park. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and written by David Koepp, this Gareth Edwards‑directed installment delivers bigger thrills and scarier dinos. With Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey leading a top-tier cast, it’s being marketed as the most terrifying chapter yet in the franchise. Audiences seem to agree—its opening weekend made it the #1 film globally, laying down a fierce gauntlet for summer box‑office dominance.

Superman

Released July 11, Superman—helmed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet—skips a traditional origin tale and throws its caped crusader directly into. Conquering the box office with $122 million domestic ($217 million worldwide) on a $225 million budget, it’s DC Studios’ most successful launch since The Batman. Critics praise its blend of wit, emotion, and heart, hailing Corenswet’s performance as both relatable and earnest.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025)

On July 18, the slasher franchise returns, this time featuring a new generation of teens along with beloved originals Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the reboot promises “balls‑to‑the‑wall fun” and a significantly heavier body count. Set in the eerie town of Southport, the plot revolves around a deadly pact and a relentless fisherman killer picking off survivors one by one.

Smurfs (2025)

Also releasing July 18, Smurfs is a lively, animated musical–fantasy directed by Chris Miller. Featuring Rihanna as Smurfette (also acts as producer), John Goodman as Papa Smurf, and a star-studded ensemble—including James Corden, Sandra Oh, and Natasha Lyonne—it blends classic elements with modern flair and musical numbers penned by Rihanna herself. The result is a charming family flick with unexpected star power.

Fantastic Four: The First Steps

Finally, July 25 sees the Marvel Cinematic Universe welcoming Fantastic Four: The First Steps. Starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss‑Bachrach, director Matt Shakman propels the iconic First Family into their cosmic origin during the ’60s. Though it’s outside your list, this MCU entry is a standout and rounds out the summer’s superhero trio.

This summer marks a nostalgic resurgence—with major franchises like Jurassic, Superman, Smurfs, and I Know What You Did Last Summer returning in high style. Some offer adrenaline-soaked scares, others heartfelt heroism or animated fun—making 2025’s summer lineup a blockbuster bonanza.
